Local schools receive Artsmark Awards at special ceremony
An awards ceremony
on Wednesday 9 July celebrated the success of six schools from Bath
& North East Somerset who received a prestigious Artsmark Award
at the Michael Tippett Centre, Bath Spa University.
Artsmark is a
national award scheme managed by Arts Council England that
recognises schools with a high level of provision in the
arts. Artsmark provides a benchmark for excellence that
encourages schools to extend the opportunities they offer in art,
dance, drama and music.
The successful
Bath & North East Somerset schools each received either a
Silver or Gold Award: Bathwick St Mary Church of England Primary
School, Norton Hill School, Paulton Junior School, Ralph Allen
School, Weston All Saints Primary School, and Widcombe Infant
School.
The awards
ceremony also celebrated the successes of 82 schools across Bath
& North East Somerset, Bristol, Gloucestershire, North
Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Swindon and Wiltshire who have
this year received an Artsmark Award. Schools had the
opportunity to perform and show their work, and their awards were
presented by Nick Capaldi, Chief Executive of Arts Council England
South West.
Creative Learning
Agency, the arts education agency for the West of England area
which is hosted by Bath & North East Somerset Council, hosted
the awards ceremony. It provides a web-based news and
information service for teachers and artists for arts education
work, and provides ongoing support for prospective and existing
Artsmark schools.

Request for Youth Arts information
'B Active'
website for young people:
If your organisation
regularly runs arts activities for young people you are encouraged
to send information to the new website: ‘B Active’. This is an
interactive website, created by Bath & North East Somerset
Council working with a group of young people, that aims to reflect
and promote the needs and views of young people and provide them
with information, advice, news and an interactive forum for the
exchange of ideas: www.b-active.info. The aim of the site is,
in part, to provide a comprehensive directory of the activities
available to young people. You are therefore being invited to
post information about your forthcoming events for children and
young people on the site. If you have an event that you are
promoting and want it to be on the website then please contact
Ted Head at Ted_head@bathnes.gov.uk and
help to make this new resource achieve its potential.
B&NES Arts Development listings:
In addition, B&NES Arts Development Unit is in the process of
updating its website, including the section relating to arts
activities in the area for young people. What we’re after is a
statement from any youth arts provider about their main strands of
work that can stay current on our site for a while - rather than
having specific dates of individual events. (These can be posted on
‘B Active’ and, of course, on your own site that we would publish a
link to). Please send your main description to: artsbulletin@bathnes.gov.uk

Freelancers’ skills survey
Creative &
Cultural Skills, the sector skills council for the creative and
cultural industries, would like to know what kinds of skills you
think are relevant to make it as a successful freelancer. You are
asked to help by completing a short survey about what skills,
activities and knowledge are important for freelancers to work
effectively in your sector.
The survey should
only take around fifteen minutes to complete and can be found at
www.ccskills-nos.org.uk/freelance.html By
completing these questions you will be helping Creative &
Cultural Skills to write a series of professional standards which
will in turn help freelancers, employers and clients understand the
skills that are needed to work as freelance.

New leadership opportunity for arts/cultural workers with
disabilities
A new online
community and distance learning scheme called Sync100 has been
launched by the Cultural Leadership Programme and aimed at people
with disabilities who are working in museums, galleries and other
cultural organisations but may be daunted by the idea of being a
leader. It will run until June 2009 and will act as a platform for
at least 100 disabled cultural leaders to share experiences of how
their disability affects them in the workplace.
In October this
year, 20 members of the Sync100 online community will be picked to
take part in Sync20, a bespoke personal coaching programme.

experience 24 hours a day. For full information and ticket sales

Cultural Olympiad news
From Caroline
Thibeaud, Cultural Olympiad Co-ordinator at Bath Festivals working
for Bath and North East Somerset Council.
This summer the UK
will be celebrating two major events: the handover of the Beijing
Olympic Games to London 2012 Games and the 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
There will be ceremonies and events in London and across the UK and
you are invited to participate in programmes of events across Bath
and North East Somerset, either as contributors or audience
members.
The programmes are
open to individuals, cultural and sport groups or organisations,
museums, libraries and archives, venues, festivals, sport and
leisure centres, etc who are invited to organise concerts and
events, taster sessions and open days, street performances,
exhibitions or any other inspiring event they can make happen to
celebrate our local talent and culture.
This is a once in
a life-time opportunity to join in celebration of the Olympic
values and to represent and share with the rest of the UK the
vibrancy and diversity of the South West regional culture.
You can get
involved on two occasions:
Sunday
24th August 2008
An afternoon of events and a civic
ceremony in central Bath will mark the hand over of the Olympic
Games from Beijing to London.
• From 2-4pm
we have planned a programme of cultural and sporting events to be
held indoors and outdoors in central Bath, including performances
in the Brunswick Room at the Guildhall. If you are interested
in adding your own events or activites to this programme please get
in touch as soon as possible with Caroline Thibeaud.
• From 4.15pm
there will be a civic ceremony open to all on the steps of the
Guildhall
• At 4.30pm
(the precise moment when the UK will present an 8 min show at the
Beijing Olympics closing ceremony) we are planning to hold 2
minutes of noise to mark the moment, with church bells across Bath
ringing. Plans are afoot for additional samba drumming outside the
Abbey, but if you would like to contribute 2 minutes of noise at
your own event then please feel free!
Friday 26
- Sunday 28th September 2008
This date is the launch
of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad and everyone across the UK is
encouraged to participate in any way they want to. This can be
playing indoors or outdoors, leading taster sessions, opening
museum doors or holding a family event. It is another chance to
celebrate and promote local groups and performers. The general
theme for the day is Open Up/Light Up/Big events.
We are very keen
to hear from venues willing to host a performances or taster
session, etc as we may be able to recommend performers, groups or
organisation looking for a venue.
Important
notice
We regret that we are unable to pay artistic,
sporting or venue fees.
In an effort to
make these celebrations accessible to all we encourage organisers,
performers and venues to provide, as much as possible, their event
free of charge to the public. However we do understand that this
may not always be possible.
We are also
interested in hearing from people who have already planned an event
for these dates as we can incorporate them in the two programmes.
Your event will then benefit from extra publicity as well as be a
part of a bigger event. Please do contact us with details of
your event.
Why take part?
We know your involvement is a
big ask in terms of commitment, time and money but we hope you will
find that taking part will not only be a once in a life time
opportunity but also a chance to your raise your profile locally
and attract new members to your organisation or audience to your
venue.
We will be
publicising your event in all the local media including the Bath
and North East Somerset Council website and the Culture South West
website. Of course we also encourage you to advertise your own
event to your usual contacts.
This can also be
an opportunity to forge new links within the cultural and sports
sectors as we may be able to arrange to pair artists and venues
together. For instance if you are a museum looking for a performer
we may be able to put you in touch with a performer looking for a
venue.
In addition your
event could win the special Cultural Olympiads ‘Inspire’ Mark if it
fits with the criteria laid out by the Cultural Olympiad Organising
Committee. Inspire is ‘a badge of recognition to innovative,
non-commercial projects and events inspired by the games across
sport, culture, education, the environment, volunteering and
business opportunities.

information go to:

What do I do next?
If you would like to take
part on any of these special days, or would like ideas for themes
or types of evernts, please contact Caroline Thibead as soon
as possible.

DCMS report: Our Creative Talent
The Department of
Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) along with Arts Council England and
the Voluntary Arts Network (VAN) recently launched their joint
major research report ‘Our Creative Talent.'
The report is the
first detailed investigation into the voluntary arts sector and the
impact voluntary and amateur arts can have in local
engagement. The research has for the first time measured the
scale of the sector and found, as was expected, a vast and vibrant
section of the cultural life of the country with:
-
49,140 groups
across the country - ranging from orchestras and book clubs to
lace-making and dance - with a total of 5.9 million
members
-
An additional
3.5 million people volunteer as extras or helpers – for example
raising funds or rigging lighting – bringing the total involvement
to 9.4 million people
-
That voluntary
arts generated a total income of £543 million in
2006/07
This report
represents the DCMS and the Arts Council acknowledging the
value and role of what is a long established and important part of
communities. The two key aspects coming out of the launch
conference have been identified as the overdue recognition of the
importance of the sector and that it isn’t cash itself that the
sector needs – a sector that is often an exemplar of creative
entrepreneurship - but a better and more consistent support
infrastructure – something which the conference committed to
addressing.
You can download
the ‘Our Creative Talent’ report at www.voluntaryarts.org/uploaded/map7402.pdf

ICIA Exhibition: Alison Marchant – Charged Atmospheres
Until Fri 31 Oct, ICIA Art Space 1, University of Bath
Alison Marchant has built a reputation for work that uses
historical documentation to create public artwork. She uses
archive photography and oral testimonies to investigate working
class cultural and domestic life in Britain, making visible hidden
lives often in the face of change. Marchant chanced upon a number
of photographs discarded by the public agency for historic
monuments. They date from the 1970s, a time when campaigns
highlighted the dilapidation of Britain’s older stately homes.
These fading photographs show the interiors of once grand houses,
now abandoned. Over the years Alison found herself re-visiting
these photographs, drawn to the visual poetry she perceived in
them. The melancholic presence of these photographs, enlarged for
her exhibition, suggest absence, their past stories elusive. As a
political artist, Marchant’s exhibition also implies a tension
between Britain’s self-promotion through its aristocratic heritage,
and the reality of homelessness, sleeping rough and
squatting.

The Fine Art Print Company present: Gagged!
Art Exhibition, Walcot Street Chapel, Bath
26 - 31 August 2008, 10.30 – 6.00 Daily, FREE ENTRY
From Tuesday 26 August come to Walcot Street Chapel for a spot of
merriment and mirth…
‘Gagged!’ has been put together by Dunstan Baker and Kath Cockshaw
of The Fine Art Print Company to coincide with the launch of their
new premises near the Chapel at 13 London St, top of Walcot St. The
show features work by three south west based artists: Ben Newman,
Andy Council and Neil Kelly. Limited edition prints of work in the
exhibition will be for sale.
Ben Newman’s unique visual language and quirky,
humorous characters set in busy, colourful compositions make his
illustrations instantly recognisable. His images have been
described, surprisingly accurately, as “radically fuzzyfelt
Bauhaus-folk illustration”. Ben regularly shows his work in
exhibitions and has recently received several important commissions
including this year’s WOMAD Festival poster. (www.bennewman.co.uk)
Andy Council is a genius illustrator with a
pro-environment message. He is perhaps best known for his witty
Arcimboldo-esque ‘city creatures’ - dinosaurs and cockerels made up
of well known architectural features of UK cities such as Bath,
Bristol and Birmingham. Andy is regularly commissioned for
publications and newspapers including the Guardian and exhibits
widely. (www.andycouncil.co.uk)
Neil Kelly describes his art work as a series of
‘Amusements’. Neil’s framed visual gags are mostly made from found
objects and materials which he delights in sourcing from charity
shops and car boot sales. Often a unique interpretation of well
known phrases or sayings, the visual immediacy and evident comedy
in Neil’s Amusements draws on his first career in commercial
advertising and, of course, his own great sense of humour.
The Fine Art Print Company make beautiful, high quality prints of
original art work and photographs, or print directly from your
supplied image files. Visit our website, www.fapc.co.uk to find
out more and why not pop in to our new premises at 13 London St
some time soon to find out what we can do for you?
All are welcome to join us at the Chapel from 6pm on Saturday 30
August to have a giggle, raise a glass to the artists and wish us
luck in our new premises. Cheers!

The Royal Photographic Society: Ken Keen exhibition
Dates: 1st – 29th August 2008
Place: The Royal Photographic Society, Fenton House, 122 Wells
Road, Bath BA2 3AH
Opening times: 9.30am - 4.30pm, Monday to Friday
Admission: Free
Title of Show: Out of the Darkness
Description: This exhibition by Ken Keen FRPS FDPS is a selection
of images from a series on Sacred Architecture. The pictures are a
celebration of the history and the mystery of these medieval
buildings in which people have worshipped over the centuries.
The title of the exhibition comes from the first chapter of
Genesis. It is a reference to the flowering of ecclesiastical
architecture after the dark ages, as well as Ken’s own endeavours
to overcome his loss of sight, plus the fact that the prints are
produced in the sun.
Ken is a member of ‘Il Laboratorio’ (the Italian for studio or
workshop), which consists of a small group who take an alternative
approach to photography. He says, “It is not just a matter of
technique. These are pictures where ‘vision’, creative and
aesthetic sensitivity and craftsmanship all play their part.”
Another aspect of their approach is that their sight and perception
of contrast is limited to the ten stops of the characteristic
curve. He says, “Many try to extend the photograph to include the
minor details in the darkest corners of an image. But this is not
what the photographers see. Including such detail detracts from the
image as a picture. It again removes the mystery and
romance.”
Ken overcame his loss of sight by his determination for his work to
be judged against all comers rather than to be judged as the work
of a ‘disabled’ photographer.

Black Swan Arts, Frome – exhibitions
28 June – 2 August, Gallery One
Trace Elements
Matthew Harris’ exploration of
pattern, colour and texture is beautifully demonstrated in this
body of new work, exhibited publicly for the first time at Black
Swan Arts before touring nationally. By a process of cutting,
patching, dying and stitching he creates pieces of cloth, each one
unique, each engaging the viewer in a visual journey. The work is
accompanied by a series of drawings which act as blueprints for his
cloth, illustrating the importance of the relationship between the
two media.
26 July – 23 August, Gallery Two
MR TALKATIV
MR TALKATIV presents an exhibition of striking figures and faces,
created from cardboard, sticks and string by artist, David Cox.
They are inspired by stories, as well as the love of rhythm and
song. Most of all, they are about how such things make you feel.
Come along, be delighted and entertained and let your own
imagination continue the narrative or tune which these characters
inspire.
9 August – 23 August, Gallery One
Take Out Community Project
Artist Edwina
Bridgeman has been collaborating with a group of adults with
physical disabilities and sensory loss over several months, using a
variety of materials and methods to create artwork inspired by the
theme of ‘home’. Initiated by Black Swan Arts, with funding from
the Lloyds TSB Foundation, the project culminates in this
extraordinary installation.
30 August – 4 October, Gallery One
Wonderland
In her fourth solo show for Black
Swan Arts Edwina Bridgeman explores the notion of 'a sense of
place', a central theme in her work. Using reclaimed materials,
Edwina celebrates the ‘marvellous’ in the ‘everyday’. We are
invited to look at objects that are familiar to us in a new way,
encouraging a re-examination our own, everyday experiences.
30 August – 4 October, Gallery Two
Catching Down - painted and stitched
textiles
Hannah Buckley is fascinated by properties of light and how this
can transform textiles. Fragile in appearance, her stitched layers
are built on a base of water-soluble fabric. The work is
distinctively contemporary, yet makes strong reference to
Elizabethan song and botanical illustrations. Large suspended
structures are created from text intertwining with imagery drawn
from the natural world. This exhibition of recent work includes
organza hangings, box framed work and a selection of artist’s
books.

Arts ‘n’ Care 2008
Arts’n’Care is back for 2008: and it’s looking bigger and
better!
Wednesday 29 October, 9.30am - 4.30pm
The Trident Technology and Business Centre, Leamington Spa,
Warwickshire
Last year's event received tremendous feedback, such as:
“Brilliant day. I increased my awareness in so many ways. Thank you
all”; “Very enjoyable and full of ideas and inspiration”;
"Excellent place to network and make links with others”; “Fantastic
atmosphere – left feeling invigorated”.
So how do we top that? Well, this year we’re holding this key
national event showcasing the effective use of the arts in social
and health care over two days: 29-30 October; the first day
dedicated to using the arts within children and young people’s
services; and the second day to adults services.
And this year we’re making 50 places free to young people (on 29
Oct) and 50 places free to adult service users (on 30 Oct) – but
it’s strictly first come, first served! And bookings are already
coming in taking advantage of this great offer - so hurry! For each
fee-paying delegate you can bring up to 3 service users or young
people free (with a max of 6 per organisation).
Check out the following links to our flyers for further
information

ArtsMatrix: support for professional and business development
ArtsMatrix is delighted to announce it has received a Grants for
the Arts award from Arts Council England (ACE), SW to deliver a
programme of professional development and business development
support to artists and creative businesses in the region. This
award will allow us to continue to deliver our high quality, much
sought-after services at a subsidised rate to all individual
practitioners and creative businesses, regardless of size or
creative discipline.
Creative Development Workshops cost just £15 per person for a
half-day, and will enable you to:
-
Clarify your creative and business goals
-
Identify your skills, strengths and expertise
-
Design a plan to achieve your aims
-
Network with other creative professionals
These workshops will take place across the South West region.
Tailored advice sessions offer in-depth guidance on developing your
career, starting a new enterprise or growing your business: an
initial session lasts two hours and you can book as many follow-ups
as you need. An initial session is £30 and follow ups are
£20
Focusing on your specific needs, this session gives you a chance to
discuss in detail your professional, creative and business goals
and design a plan to achieve them.
“The session was extremely helpful, useful and productive. An
excellent service.”
All of our advisors are SFEDI accredited - the national
accreditation for business advisors. We think it is just as
important that they have run – or still run - their own creative
businesses and therefore genuinely understand the challenges of
making a living from creativity.
“Information I could only find from somebody who has worked in the
creative sector.”
If you would like us to help you, email ruth.staple@artsmatrix.org.uk

Free training seminar - Making your activity child-safe
- advance notice
An introduction to protecting children and other vulnerable
groups.
Wednesday 8th October, 6.30 - 8.00pm
The Aix en Provence Room, Bath Guildhall, BA1 5AW
Arts and cultural groups and organisations have a duty of care for
the children and young people they work with. Whatever the
scope of your work with children and young people, this seminar
will provide an introduction to best practice and help event
organisers to have appropriate and proportionate measures in place
to ensure the safety, welfare and pastoral care of children and
young people. Museums, arts and cultural sector organisations who
provide events and activities for children, young people and other
vulnerable groups are strongly advised to attend.
Tara Savage, Child-Safe Co-ordinator based at Bath Police Station,
said: “It is good practice to have a child protection policy within
your group or organisation. Anyone attending a Child-Safe seminar
will receive an Information and Resource pack that will enable them
to develop and implement an effective child protection scheme.
Organisers, leaders and parents can feel reassured that your
organisation takes child protection seriously.”
This free seminar is supported by B&NES Council Arts
Development Service. It will be delivered by Child-Safe, a
registered international children and young person's charity whose
aims are to provide practical advice and to promote the safety,
welfare and pastoral care of children and young people involved in
such activities.
To book a place on the seminar please contact Tara Savage on 01225

Two studio shares available in Bath
1) At the Monmouth Place Studios in Bath a shared place in a studio
for a ceramic artist has come up.
Interested ceramacists should contact Jim McDonagh, tel: 01225
428299 or mobile: 07784269870.
2) Cathy Wood has sculpture space to share:
“I have space in my stone carving workshop, about 10 miles from
Bath. The rent is very cheap, but it is very basic - just part of a
sheep barn! It is covered but no sides so plenty of ventilation!
There is a power point for using electric tools. There is no dry
storage space. Basically you have to love the big outdoors and be
very hardy in winter! It is a great place for making a mess and not
having to clear up afterwards! I love it but I am a bit of a
country bumpkin! No good for city types! It is on a working farm so
you have to respect the farmer and animals etc.”
If you are interested in this one please contact the BANA office to
be put in touch with Cathy. 01225 471714 / enquiries@bana-arts.co.

Artists Access to Art Colleges Scheme: AA2A residencies
This is an artist in residence scheme hosted by City of Bath
College, Department of Art, Design and Graphics. A project set up
project with the Council for Higher Education in Art and Design,
and funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council,
England
The Artists Access to Art Colleges project is a national project
that in 2008/09 celebrates its 10th year by offering 128 ‘mini
residencies’. City of Bath College is one of 32 colleges and
universities across England that has been successful in its
application to host an Artists Access scheme in its Department of
Art, Design and Graphics. At a local level the AA2A scheme will
give four artists and makers the opportunity to use the college’s
facilities from computers to kilns, and painting studios to
workshop facilities and the library to develop their work.
This allows students to work alongside artists and gain a valuable
insight into the art world outside college. The deadline for
applications is Monday 1st September.
For more details of the scheme visit www.AA2A.org and for an application pack
contact the college co-ordinator, David Moxon, City of Bath
College, Department of Art, Design and Graphics, Avon Street, Bath,

Join the BANA exhibition team
Would you like to gain experience in coordinating exhibitions and
events, installing exhibitions, marketing and publicity or
sponsorship raising? Do you want to open up opportunities in
arts management, curating or arranging your own shows? Or maybe you
already have skills in one of these areas and could teach us a
thing or two?
These are important skills for artists to promote and develop their
own work. And this is an opportunity to be part of a
well-profiled exhibition from the Bath Area Network of Artitsts
(BANA) in a city centre location, supported by the Holburne Museum
and Bath Royal Literary & Scientific Institution, curated by Dr
Alexander Sturgis, Director of the Holburne.
Dr Babette Martini of the BANA committee has made excellent
progress on setting up the exhibition, but she and the committee
need a hand with:
-
Coordinating the selection and installation of work
-
Publicising the exhibition
-
Arranging the launch event
-
Approaching businesses for sponsorship
-
Documenting and evaluating the process
Your involvement can be arranged around your schedule – either an
hour here and there in the build-up, or a couple of days’ intensive
activity setting up or during the show. We will be looking to
allocate volunteers a specific role (e.g. Launch Coordinator) for
which you will take responsibility and for which references can be
provided afterwards.
The exhibition opens on Friday 24th October and runs until 31st
October 2008. Full details will be sent to all BANA members
shortly with information on how to submit work.
If you would like to be involved, and can spare just a little time,
call BANA now on 01225 471714 / email enquiries@bana-arts.co.uk

Speakers wanted for BRLSI Wednesday Morning Café
As you may well know, the Bath Royal Literary & Scientific
Institution on Queen Square has for the last 200 years provided a
focus for the curiosity and interest of visitors and the
inhabitants of Bath. In 2006 we set up a Wednesday Morning
Café to invite speakers willing to exchange views on the topics and
concerns of the day with members of the public.
On every Wednesday in September we will be running a series of
discussions on Bath – The Last Ten Years, asking speakers to
discuss their own experiences and the changes that have occurred in
their fields over the last decade. The pace of change in
almost everything appears to be quickening and the opportunity to
look back and attempt to understand the implications for the future
would be one we would welcome. We are not asking for a
lecture or a talk, more the personal impressions of a
changing scene where the current cult of celebrity seems to
undermine your own work and experience ethic.
The Wednesday Morning Café begins at 10.30am and continues until
12.30pm. The discussion is serious but friendly and lunch can
be provided for the speaker in one of the many good restaurants in
Bath.
If you are interested in speaking please contact Clive Gage,
Chairman, c/o the BRLSI, enquiries@brlsi.org / 01225
