Male and Suprapubic Catheterisation
TARGET GROUP: All trained nurses working with
suprapubic or male catheters.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of the course
participants will:
- Have an understanding of the anatomy and function of the
bladder and lower urinary tract, especially regarding differences
between male and female.
- Have an understanding of professional and registration
issues
- Be able to carry out full patient assessment being aware of
potential risks and issues re future catheter management
- Know how to select the most appropriate type of catheter for
your patient
- Know how to select the most appropriate type of containment for
your patient
- Know which patients may be more suitable for suprapubic
catheter
- Be able to recognise and advise re: issues around catheter care
and infection control
- Be able to recognise patient’s that warrant referral for either
Continence or Urology follow up
