Foster Carers - Extra Support

Respite 2000

Children

What is Respite 2000?

Children at play

Respite 2000, also known as R2K, is an initiative that was launched at the turn of the millennium, to cope with the increasing requests from foster carers to receive additional support, to help them effectively manage their intensive workload as carers.

The Aims!

We aim to support our foster carers by providing fostered children and children who foster, a variety of activities and events throughout the year; including day trips during the school holidays, evening and weekend events throughout the year as well as week-long summer holidays.

Respite 2000

Respite 2000 offers Looked After Children the support needed to:

  • Be healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve
  • Make a positive contribution
  • Achieve economic well-being

Who Provides the Service?

The Project was set up by Bath and north East Somerset Social and Housing Services.  The project is run by the R2K Coordinator; based within and supported by the Family Placement Team.

Supervision/Care

At the heart of R2K events are a team of dedicated Sessional Workers.  The team is made up from a wide variety of individuals from all backgrounds including Education, Care Work, Youth Work and so on.  Sessional Workers amongst out staff team are able to effectively develop rapport with the children and young people they work with, providing a clear feeling of consistency within Respite 2000.

Every Sessional Worker we employ is required to meet specific criteria, must be successful at an interview and is subject to a Medical and Criminal Records Bureau check.  We provide ongoing support and specific training to all of our Sessional Workers, and value all input received from them.

Additional Information

Activities that have been featured on the R2K programme of events include: Country Parks, Bowling, Ice Skating, Theatre Outings, Rugby and Basketball Workshops, Outward Bounds activities and so on.

R2K Holiday destinations have included camping in Dorset, as well as holiday parks in Dorset and Devon.

This scheme is made available to all Bath and North East Somerset foster carers who currently have a placement.  The children of foster carers are also eligible for the scheme.

  • Fundamental to the successful fostering of Looked After Children is the quality of support provided to foster carers.
