Services for Deaf People

Social Services provide care in the community by offering a wide range of help, advice and services following a general assessment of your needs. We aim to help people live as independently as possible whatever your need or disability.

The Sensory Services Team provides a service to deaf adults and children through Social Workers within the Team.

What happens when contact is made ?

The Duty Officer will discuss your enquiry and offer advice, guidance and assistance or with your agreement, make a referral to the Sensory Services Team.

Members of the Sensory Services Team have specialist knowledge of deafness and hearing impairment. They have a range of communication skills including British Sign Language.

Who do we work with ?

We work with all ages of deaf people; children, adolescents and adults. We also work with hearing parents of deaf children, and deaf parents of hearing or deaf children.

Our service is aimed at those in greatest or highest need.

What services do we offer?

We have access to a wide range of services provided by Social Services or other organisations.  We can provide information and advice on deaf related issues, equipment provision, benefits, social work support, day care, home care, mobile meals, occupational therapy, respite care, residential and nursing care and many other services.

How quickly can I speak to a Social Worker?

If you make contact during duty time either in person or via Minicom, phone, or fax, advice may be available straightaway.  Otherwise general information may be required from you to decide whether the situation is urgent, and a Social Worker will try to respond as quickly as possible.

When can I make contact ?

There is a Duty Officer, based at Lewis House who is a BSL user, and is normally available every day between 9.30 and 11.30.  When this service is unavailable due to holidays or sickness, alternative arrangements will be made.
