Course Outline
This one day course is a progression from the Foundation course
and will provide participants with an introduction to the model of
intervention used by practitioners in B&NES who are working
with this client group and their families. The day also provides an
opportunity to consider the impact of this work on professionals
and address support, consultation and supervision ideas.
Aims/Objectives
- To consider the needs of young people whose behaviour is
sexually harmful
- To consider how the AIM assessment tool used in B&NES
guides practitioners in providing appropriate intervention
services
- To consider the therapeutic needs not only of the young person
but also of their family/carers
- To promote a multi- agency approach to working with young
people whose behaviour is sexually harmful
- To provide participants with an opportunity to reflect on the
impact on them personally and professionally engaging in this
work
- To assist participants in identifying appropriate
supervision/support
Learning Outcomes – at the end of this course
participants will:
- Understand the model used in B&NES to address the needs of
young people whose behaviour is sexually harmful
- Be aware of current research underpinning this area of
work
- Be able to consider the therapeutic needs of these young people
and their families in the context of the multi-agency assessment
tool
- Understand the contribution that their agency can make to
meeting the therapeutic needs of the young person and their
family
- Be aware of the impact issues for professionals of doing this
work
- Be aware of the support/supervision available to them locally
from within their agency and from the Keepsafe project
Target Staff
All staff involved in providing services for children and their
families in B&NES, including managers and front line staff.
Participants must have attended the Level 3 Foundation course on
this subject.

- Give the child or young person the opportunity to participate
in decisions affecting them as appropriate to age and ability and
taking their wishes and feelings into account.
- Understand what is meant by safeguarding and the different ways
in which children and young people can be harmed (including by
other children and young people and through the internet).
- Understand the key role of parents and carers in safeguarding
and promoting children and young people’s welfare and involve them
accordingly, while recognising factors that can affect parenting
and increase the risk of abuse (for example domestic
violence).
Communication, recording and reporting
- Being able to recognise when a child or young person is in
danger or at risk of harm and take action to protect them.
- Undertake (formal or informal) assessments and be alert to
concerns about a child or young person’s safety or welfare,
including unexplained changes in behaviour and signs of abuse or
neglect.
Legal and procedural frameworks
- Know about Government and local guidance and procedure and how
they apply to the wider working environment.
- Be aware of national guidance and local procedures, and your
own role and responsibilities within these for safeguarding and
promoting children and young people’s welfare.
Multi-agency working
Know how to make queries
- Know your role within different group situations and how you
contribute to the overall group process, understanding the values
of sharing how you approach your role with other
professionals.
- Have a general knowledge and understanding of the range of
organisations and individuals working with children, young people
and those caring for them, and be aware of the roles and
responsibilities of other professionals.

- Understand the way that partner services operate – their
procedures, objectives, role and relationships – in order to work
effectively alongside them.

- Work in a team context, forging and sustaining relationships
across agencies and respecting the contribution of others working
with children, young people and families.
