Who's who in Bath World Heritage?

World Heritage in Bath is coordinated by the Council from Planning Services. A dedicated officer has prepared and produced a management plan for the World Heritage Site and is now coordinating its implementation. This officer also liaises with other World Heritage Sites to exchange information and learn from the practice of others, and represents the city at World Heritage meetings.

World Heritage Steering Group

The preparation of the Management Plan was overseen by a Steering Group. The Group was made up of local and national organisations with an interest in heritage and the city. They guided the officer's work and approved the finished Plan.

The membership of the Steering Group has been reviewed and changed, and now oversees the implementation of the Plan. It meets twice a year to assess progress and decide on priorities for action, based on the action plan in the Management Plan and on current events in the World Heritage Site. The Group is coordinated by the Council's World Heritage Officer and English Heritage is the Chair. The following organisations give their time and expertise to sit on the Group:

  • English Heritage
  • Bath & North East Somerset Council
  • Department for Culture, Media and Sport
  • ICOMOS UK
  • The National Trust
  • Bath Federation of Residents Association
  • Bath Chamber of Commerce
  • Bath Preservation Trust
  • Bath Society
  • University of Bath
  • Cotswolds AONB Conservation Board
  • Somer Housing Group
  • Bath Tourism Plus
  • Bath Charter Trustees
  • ALCA
  • Avon and Somerset Constabulary

You can contact the Steering Group via the Council's World Heritage Officer.

The Stakeholder Group

The Stakeholder Group is made up of over 100 local organisations and groups covering topics from conservation to transport, education to tourism. It provides a much wider pool of expertise about the city. The Group is kept informed about World Heritage issues and work, and meets once a year to discuss issues and advise the World Heritage Officer. The Group is also used as a primary consultation group and to recruit people to take part in or organise World Heritage projects (though anyone can be involved in projects).

You can contact the Stakeholder Group or learn more about it via the Council's World Heritage Officer.

Who else does World Heritage work?

Lots of people! You might even be doing something to help the World Heritage Site and implement the Plan without knowing it. There are many individuals, businesses and local groups who contribute towards fulfilling the actions in the Management Plan, other than those on the Steering Group and the Stakeholder Group. Here are a few examples:

  • The Combe Down Heritage Society are very aware of their area's contribution to our World Heritage status. They recently reviewed how their group works and what their aims are, and have included World Heritage in their new Statement of Intent. In this they demonstrate how their work of protecting and improving access to the industrial and geological heritage of Combe Down links to the aims of the Management Plan.
  • In September 2004, the National Cycling Network charity Sustrans, recently helped the DCMS organise World Heritage cycle rides across the country. The local Sustrans officer organised a ride from Bristol to Bath to promote the use of sustainable transport for visiting and exploring the World Heritage Site.
  • The Avon RIGS group met with the Council's World Heritage Officer in Autumn 2004 to discuss ways of promoting geology as an important part of the World Heritage Site, and getting local people involved in celebrating our geological heritage.

If you think your work also contributes to the World Heritage Site and the Management Plan, contact the Council's World Heritage Officer or read the Your World Heritage - getting involved page.
