World Heritage Site Management Plan 2003-2009

Management plans are seen by the international heritage community as an effective way of caring for World Heritage Sites. All sites must now prepare a management plan as part of the process of getting onto the UNESCO World Heritage List.

All UK World Heritage Sites now have, or are now preparing, management plans. The UK is seen as a leading country in preparing these plans and regularly provides advice to heritage specialists around the world.

The first management plan for Bath was published by Bath & North East Somerset Council in 2003 and officially launched in September 2004. The plan was produced in partnership with English Heritage and the World Heritage Steering Group, made up of local and national organisations committed to Bath as a World Heritage Site.

What is the Plan?

The Plan is a strategic level document that can be used by anyone from the local authority to local businesses, community groups or individual residents. It aims to help coordinate management of the site to ensure that our heritage is protected for future generations and works in harmony with the dynamic modern city of Bath. It also aims to inspire people to include World Heritage in their work or to start up new projects to care for, learn about and enjoy the World Heritage Site.

The Plan contains a description of the site and its significance, sets out the issues concerning management of the site and lists objectives and actions to guide our work, and the work of all those involved in managing the site, over the next few years. The Plan covers a range of topics including conservation, planning, education, transport, community life and tourism.

The World Heritage Site Management Plan has been adopted by the Council and approved by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

For more information on how to use the Management Plan, or if you are interested in setting up a project about World Heritage, read the Your World Heritage - getting involved page.

Examples of other World Heritage Site management plans can be seen using the links on the UK World Heritage sites page in the Quick Guide.
