Tips for reducing food waste
We are supporting the national Love Food Hate Waste campaign
which has identified that we throw away 1/3 of the food we buy
(6.7m tonnes each year) and most of this is food that could have
been eaten.
This has a big impact on our environment due to the energy,
water and packaging needed for it’s production, transportation and
storage amounting to about 20% of our climate change
emissions. What’s more, the food that then ends up in
landfill sites gives off methane, a powerful greenhouse
gas.
Most of us don't realise the impact that food waste has on our
environment and most of us don't realise how much food we actually
waste.
To help us all reduce the amount of food that we throw away, we
have included some suggestions to help you:
- Make a list before I go shopping
- Check that my fridge is between 1 and 5 centrigrade
- Cook the right amount and follow the portion guidelines on
packets
- Use up leftovers to create new meals
- Keep a food waste diary for a week to see how much and what
types of food I throw away
- Visit the www.lovefoodhatewaste.com
website. This comprehensive website is full of information
about food waste and has plenty more ideas to help
you.
