Recycling and Waste Activities in Schools
Bath & North East Somerset Council can
provide a range of activities, talks and assemblies for schools as
well as depot visits for small groups.
Activities are provided for all Key Stages both at primary and
secondary levels and can be tailored to meet the specific needs of
each school.
The activities below summarise some of the more popular
activities we offer
An opportunity for individual classes to look at the type
and amount of waste generated by each classroom and look at
measures to reduce the waste.
This is an ideal activity for schools looking to set up or
improve their recycling systems and provides lots of opportunities
for the children to learn about mathematical ideas.

We have been running series of assemblies to promote the green
box recycling collections. Children are given a postcard
to take home to their parents to complete (there is a box to tick
for those already recycling and a second box for those who need a
recycling box to start).
Every child who returns their postcard wins a recycled pencil
and the school with the most returns receives a prize.
Each year, a selection of schools are invited to take part in
this successful project.

A specialised scheme to encourage children to reduce the amount
of waste in their school lunches has been launched at High
Littleton Primary, Farmborough Primary, St Julians Primary,
Marksbury Primary, Moorlands Junior and Welton Primary Schools.
Once a week the children aim to bring in lunches that only
contain materials that can be reused, recycled or composted.
Children are rewarded with stamp cards and certificates and we
are currently looking to develop this scheme further.

A classroom based activity using old catalogues and magazines to
find as many items as possible that can be recycled through the
green box.
This is extremely popular with the children and is an excellent
way for children to learn about what can be collected for
recycling.

Litter Education
We offer a series of annual assemblies for primary schools to
teach children about the problems associated with litter.
We also run an annual Clean Schools competition during the
summer term to find the cleanest school. We assess the
cleanliness of the school grounds along with measures the school
has taken to promote litter education amongst the school and the
community.
The winning school receive £150, a prize cup and gold
certificate. All participating schools are awarded with
certificates.
