Making a Planning Application

Submitting an application online

Planning Portal Logo

We encourage you to submit your application online to help speed up the process; however you will still be able to submit your application on paper if you wish (copies of the paper forms are available further down this page).

Submit an application, drawings and pay the fee online through the Planning Portal (external link).

The Planning Portal (a UK Government website) contains information on the planning system, from making a planning application to appealing against a decision. General guidance on the online process can also be found on their 'Make an Application', 'Can you apply online' and 'Frequently Asked Questions' pages.

We encourage developers/applicants to seek pre-application advice with officers to identify any potential issues prior to formal submission and check our Standard details required for applications web page.

Reasons to submit your planning application online through the Planning Portal

  • Receive instant email notification on receipt of electronic applications
  • Pay online through secure website
  • Paperless process
  • Online guidance in making your application
  • Submit either a single application or a combination of different types of application
  • Useful tools - volume & fee calculators
  • Mapping service - site location plan

To ensure the smooth processing of your online application:

  • Attach all drawings as PDF (Portable Document Format) files
  • Photographs can be JPEG file format
  • No individual file should be larger than 5Mb
  • Ensure that all drawings include the print (paper) size; the relevant scale at that print size (e.g. 1:100 etc); a scale bar showing the length of 1 and 10 metres and key dimensions.
  • Preferable drawing sizes are A3 or A4
  • Consult the Validation Checklists
  • For major applications submitted online, complete the form online and post/deliver a minimum of 4 sets of all the application documentation to Planning Services. In addition, copies of the application documentation should be supplied on CD disc to enable electronic processing. No individual file should be larger than 5Mb.

NOTE: Information provided on the application form and accompanying drawings and documents will be made available on the internet.

Submitting an application in the post

You can make an application by selecting the relevant downloadable forms from a list of application types. These forms are available as PDF documents to print off and to complete in writing before sending by post to Planning Services, Trimbridge House, Trim Street, Bath BA1 2DP.

We encourage developers/applicants to seek pre-application advice with officers to identify any potential issues prior to formal submission and check our Standard details required for applications web page.

All submitted plans must be to a recognised scale, plans that include the words “Do Not Scale” will not be registered.

NOTE: Information provided on the application form and accompanying drawings and documents will be made available on the internet.

1APP: From 6th April 2008, the Standard Planning Application Form (1APP) will become the only official method of submitting a planning application. Applications submitted on old forms after this mandatory deadline set by central government cannot be accepted by the local authority.
