Locally Important Buildings Supplementary Planning
Document
Update
Please note that consultation on the draft SPD closed
on the 22 May 2008. Many thanks for all comments received. It was
originally hoped that the SPD would be adopted during August 2008.
However concern has been raised over the resources necessary to
administer the nomination process expeditiously. Formal adoption
has been postponed until this matter has been resolved. A further
update will be given in due course.
Further Information
There are a large number of buildings and structures in Bath and
North East Somerset which, while not statutory listed, are of
architectural and historic interest or make a significant
contribution to the character and appearance of an area. Bath and
North East Somerset Council is in the process of preparing a List
of these ‘Locally Important Buildings’.
The objectives of the Supplementary Planning Document
(SPD) is to raise the profile of and give recognition to
buildings and structures that contribute to the special character
of an area; to encourage the preservation and repair of buildings
and structures of local importance; to provide information and
guidance on the production of the list of Locally Important
Buildings; and to provide guidance to the Development Management
Team on alterations to a building on the local list where planning
permission is required.
The SPD will set out detailed planning guidance to supplement
the Bath & North East Somerset Local Plan (Adopted Oct 2007)
policy on the list of Locally Important Buildings (Policy
BH.5).

Subject to consideration of the comments received it is hoped to
formally adopt the SPD as Council Policy in August 2008. It is then
intended to allow Parish Councils and other interested parties a
period of six months to nominate locally listed buildings,
nominations to be received by the end of February 2009. Your
