Locally Important Buildings Supplementary Planning Document

Locally Important Buildings SPD Cover Page

Update

Please note that consultation on the draft SPD closed on the 22 May 2008. Many thanks for all comments received. It was originally hoped that the SPD would be adopted during August 2008. However concern has been raised over the resources necessary to administer the nomination process expeditiously. Formal adoption has been postponed until this matter has been resolved. A further update will be given in due course.

Further Information

There are a large number of buildings and structures in Bath and North East Somerset which, while not statutory listed, are of architectural and historic interest or make a significant contribution to the character and appearance of an area. Bath and North East Somerset Council is in the process of preparing a List of these ‘Locally Important Buildings’.

The objectives of the Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) is to raise the profile of and give recognition to buildings and structures that contribute to the special character of an area; to encourage the preservation and repair of buildings and structures of local importance; to provide information and guidance on the production of the list of Locally Important Buildings; and to provide guidance to the Development Management Team on alterations to a building on the local list where planning permission is required.

The SPD will set out detailed planning guidance to supplement the Bath & North East Somerset Local Plan (Adopted Oct 2007) policy on the list of Locally Important Buildings (Policy BH.5).

 Consultation Activities

The consultation period on the above documents will run from the 10th April to the 22nd May 2008. We welcome comments on these draft documents from the public or interested groups.

Copies of these documents can be viewed in all public libraries in the district and in Council offices.

There will also be the opportunity to come and talk to Planning and Conservation officers about these documents at the ‘drop-in’ session on Wednesday 23rd April 2008 between 9am and 1pm at the Council’s Planning Office, Trimbridge House, Trim Street, Bath BA1 2DP. Alternatively contact us by phone or email if you would like to discuss.

Representations in respect of the Supplementary Planning Document should be made on the enclosed representation form and returned to the Planning Policy Team, Bath and North East Somerset Council, Trimbridge House, Trim Street, Bath BA1 2DP  or e-mail planning_policy@bathnes.gov.uk

Nomination Process

Subject to consideration of the comments received it is hoped to formally adopt the SPD as Council Policy in August 2008. It is then intended to allow Parish Councils and other interested parties a period of six months to nominate locally listed buildings, nominations to be received by the end of February 2009. Your comments on those guidance note and nomination form are also very welcome.

Sustainability Appraisal

Sustainability Appraisal/Strategic Environmental Assessment (SA/SEA) is a process of appraising the social, environmental and economic effects of plans strategies and policies from the outset of plan preparation.

Sustainability Appraisal must be undertaken for all Supplementary Planning Documents. View the Locally Important Building SPD draft Sustainability Appraisal.
