Core Strategy

Launch Consultation

The Council is reviewing its planning policies. To stimulate discussion about how our district should develop over the next 20 years, the Council published a document that identified the major issues it thinks we are facing.

The Core Strategy Launch Document along with other publicity material is available to download from this page, including:

  • An Executive Summary launch document
  • Area based leaflet
  • Core Strategy launch poster

The Council held a public consultation on the Core Strategy launch document between 25th September and 17th December 2007. We received around 3000 comments from around 300 people/groups in response to the Core Strategy Launch consultation. These comments can now be viewed online, just click on the link below, select "Core Strategy Launch Consultation" from the list and then "View Responses".

The timetable for the Local Development Framework is likely to be affected by the changes in legislation recommended by the Planning White Paper. A broad options consultation on the Core Strategy anticipated for March 2009.

This webpage will be updated on details of further opportunities to get involved in the preparation of the Core Strategy.

The Core Strategy

Work to put together a new generation of planning policies which will set out the broad locations for new housing, jobs and community facilities is being launched by the Council. Some of these new policies will be set out in document called the Core Strategy.

The Core Strategy will set out the long term planning framework for the District looking ahead to 2026.

It will take on board the findings of studies, other Council Strategies and consultations, including the Sustainable Community Strategy and the Future for Bath & North East Somerset Visions.

How will the Core Strategy be Prepared?

We do not have a blank canvas when preparing the Core Strategy.  There are national planning policies and standards that we must adhere to. Our plans must also be in general conformity with the Regional Spatial Strategy.  The Regional Spatial Strategy sets out unprecedented levels of growth in housing and other areas over the next 20 years.  Find out more about the Regional Spatial Strategy.

The Core Strategy must reflect the local distinctiveness of the area and deal with issues relevant at a local level.

Furthermore a Sustainability Appraisal must be carried out for the Core Strategy
