Council and Contractor’s Obligations During the Works
Fact Sheet 4
Overview
The local community is a very important stakeholder for the
Combe Down Stone Mines project. There are approximately 600 houses
and 1,300 people living above the mines. The continuing risks posed
by the unstable mines and the potential disruption during the
contract period, will play a signifi cant part in the community
life in Combe Down. Consequently the community is most sensitive
with regard to the project and the impacts relating to it.
The Council has always placed the greatest importance on its
relations with the local community and Councillors and to this end
has made every effort through the Combe Down Stone Mines Community
Association, consultations, information briefings and public
meetings to actively inform the community about the details of the
common objective of stabilisation of the mines.
The Council has so far received signifi cant support and has a
good working relationship with the wider community, which it wants
to continue for the duration of the scheme.
Communication Philosophy
The Project Team is focused towards achieving an open and honest
dialogue in all communication opportunities with stakeholders. The
following principles have been developed as a guide and it is
anticipated that they will act as the two-way process for the Combe
Down Stone Mines Project: giving out information to the community,
and enabling the public to communicate information to the
project.
Response Times - The Contractor should be aware that he will be
expected to respond to queries forwarded by the formal
communications channels in a defined timescale, to meet the targets
set by the Project Team.
Personnel Identification
Contractor is to ensure that his personnel carry photo identifi
cation tags, whenever working on the surface outside the defined
worksites, similar to this specimen.
Community Issues to be followed by the Council Project Team
Communications Strategy - The Project Team have established formal
communications paths that will provide answers to queries from
residents. These queries will be progressed in a controlled
fashion, being allocated task numbers and providing appropriate
answers in defi ned timescales. This Communications Policy will
follow the policies established by the Council for providing
information to the public and in particular those communications
policies highlighted above.
