Traffic & Transport

Weight Limits

Throughout the village the general limits are 7.5t for through traffic and 17t for loading and unloading limit was introduced on 24th January 1995.

Along North Road and Ralph Allen Drive the weight limit is 7.5 Tonnes through traffic
and no limit for access (environmental limit).

All the Highways have been subjected to a comprehensive risk assessment to ensure that they implemented weight limits are appropriate. When the analysis has shown the road to be unsafe a closure has been implemented while strengthening is undertaken.

As much work as possible is carried out underground, however road closures occur to allow works from above ground in areas that are inaccessible from below.  Health and Safety of the workers below, as well as people above is a big consideration when closing roads.

The Project Team apologises for any inconvenience caused throughout the duration of the works. If you have any traffic management enquiries, please contact Highways (01225 394339).

Current Traffic Restrictions

EMERGENCY ROAD CLOSURE - CHURCH ROAD

We have recently discovered an area of mine void with extremely poor ground conditions beneath an area of Church Road.

There was an Emergency Road closure Friday 10th October.  The area of poor condition is the section of Church Road from the east of the junction with The Avenue, to 89 Church Road.   This area will be completely closed to traffic.  At the advice of the Highway Authority the road will be closed between the junction with The Avenue and the junction with Belmont Road.  The section of road  from 91 Church Road and the junction of Belmont Road will be access only.  Pedestrian access will be maintained along the whole road.  Please see map below (pdf).

Diversions will be in place via Belmont Road and Summer Lane.  The one way restriction between the junction with Belmont Road and Tyning Road will remain in place at the advice of the Highway Authority.

We appreciate that this emergency closure will cause you inconvenience but hope you understand the need to prevent any danger to users of the road.  We are mindful that we have informed you of other potential road closures and would like to reassure you that we will coordinate the closures to ensure access to the village is maintained.

ROCK HALL LANE - NO VEHICLE ACCESS DURING WORKING HOURS -3rd November up to 2 weeks.

Future Traffic Restrictions

In January 2009, a section of Church Road between the eastern bounadary of the Holy Trinity Church and the junction with Belmont Road will be closed to enable stabilisation works to be carried out.

The mine void in this area cannot be safely accessed from underground therefore stabilisaton will need to be carried out on the surface and hence the road will need to be closed.  This section of road is expected to be closed until summer 2009.  Diversions will be via Belmont Road and Summer Lane.
