Landscape

Landscape architects work within the Environment Team carrying out a wide range of work in support of the visions and objectives of Planning Services. We are also able to offer our services to other departments within the Council and to community groups and schools.

Strategic Planning

We ensure that landscape issues are represented at a strategic level by maintaining input to the Local Plan through all its stages. We also actively implement landscape related policies of the Local Plan through the preparation of Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG). We published “ Rural Landscapes of Bath & North East Somerset – A Landscape Character Assessment” in 2003 and followed this up with a companion Urban Landscape Character Assessment in 2004.

Development Control

We are actively involved in the development control process. We provide advice on landscape setting, protection of site features and negotiate suitable landscape enhancement schemes for many planning applications including pre-application and development team requests. We scope and assess the landscape aspects of environmental impact assessments, present landscape evidence at appeals and Public Inquiries, and ensure that landscape requirements of s.106 management agreements are fully represented.

We are currently producing a series of guidance notes for developers to help ensure that the landscape aspects of planning applications are of the highest quality. The first to be published is “Guidelines for Hedgerow Planting and Establishment”.

Landscape Design

We provide other Council departments with an urban and rural, hard and soft landscape design and contract management service from site survey through to implementation of projects on the ground.
