Water Supply Testing

Chew Valley Lake (Reservoir)

Water is essential to life, but having clean, available drinking water is something that we often take for granted.

The majority of properties within Bath and North East Somerset receive their water from a water company (mains supply) with the remaining properties using smaller private water supplies.

Mains water is provided by either of the following two water companies:

Private Water Supplies

Private spring supply

Private water supplies are generally situated in the more rural and agricultural parts of the region, with the source of the supply as a well, borehole, stream, river, lake, pond or spring.  Ideally the supply system, including the headworks and pipework, should be regularly maintained.  However, this is often not the case and contamination can arise.

To check the quality of any multiple supplies Bath & North East Somerset Council undertakes a monitoring programme.  If you have a supply which is serving your property only and are concerned about the quality of your private water we will sample the supply on request.

Monitoring

The results of the analysis of samples from private water supplies are compared with the relevant drinking water standards as laid down in the Private Water Supply Regulations 1991.  These regulations are currently under review.  Any failure is taken up with the water supplier.

Water Quality

If your complaint relates to the quality of a mains supply from either Wessex Water or Bristol Water Plc then we would recommend that you contact that company initially, then contact us if you are unhappy with their response.
