Building Control has a Structural Engineering unit that offers the following services: -

  • Inspection of all structural calculations and designs submitted with Building Regulation applications.

  • Design and analysis service for internal Council departments.

  • Design and analysis service for other Local Authorities.

  • Design and analysis service for appropriate bodies.

  • CDM service as Planning Supervisor for internal contracts.

  • Advice to the public and professionals on all structural matters.

In addition, staff help in the appraisal of buildings and structures at risk from collapse and advise owners accordingly.

Building Control are members of the Combe Down Stone Mines Project Team ensuring that development proposals over areas of former mining take account of the ground conditions.

The topography, geology and previous mineral extraction of the Bath and North East Somerset area means that constant vigilance must be observed by staff when considering development proposals.

The incidence of land slip and unsuitable ground within the district is relatively high and therefore demands that we are alert to the dangers that may befall development.
