Introduction
Bath and North East Somerset Council is keen to support
local food initiatives, such as farmers’ markets and the North East
Somerset and Bath Local Food Partnership, because of the importance
of the food issue in tackling both the causes and effects of
climate change. The Council also uses its purchasing power to
stimulate the local market and help to meet its sustainability
objectives (see
case studies).
Buying locally produced food helps the local economy by
supporting local businesses. It’s also good for the environment by
reducing the distance food travels (‘food miles’) and reduces the
need for packaging. You will find that the food is often fresher
and healthier, and you will learn to eat more seasonally. Another
advantage is that you can get to know where and how your food has
been produced.
Other options are growing your own food in your garden or at an
allotment. Growing your own will ensure you know exactly where your
food has come from and can provide other benefits such as improving
health and providing some exercise.
