Hollies – Wind Turbine

Hollies Wind Turbine

The Council installed a one kilowatt wind turbine on the Hollies, Midsomer Norton in August 2007. The installation is photographed above.

The Council has installed this turbine on the Hollies for a number of reasons.

The building is a high profile, public access site. The installation can be clearly seen from various areas around Midsomer Norton High Street and this allows assessment of the visual impact and sound footprint generated by the system.

The site is controlled directly by the Council and, as such, facilitates organising works and reviewing performance.

The low costs of the installation allow the project to be undertaken to provide the public with information on generation at this site without the necessity to carry out expensive wind surveys.

It should be noted that wind levels and turbulence will affect the amount of electricity generated. It is likely that much higher levels of generation will be seen in the winter than summer months.

The amount of electricity generated by this installation is shown in the table below. It is intended that this website is used for any interested parties in order to further inform their thinking regarding this technology.

Question and Answer

Example Question
Q - What issues were
faced during the installation
of the turbine?

Example Answer
A - This is a new
technology and
various issues
arose during
installation.  Liaison
was carried out
between the Council,
its contractor, the team
installing the turbine
and Windsave who
build the turbines.
Mounting brackets had
to be reversed and have
extra parts welded on.
Two site visits were
required; however, eventually
the turbine was installed to
everyone's satisfaction.
Q - The wind turbine is
generating all this
electricity, but what is
the electricity being
used for? If it is powering
the Hollies, or part of it...
Or is it being stored
in case of a breakdown?
A - The power generated
by the turbine is fed
into the Hollies electricity
ring, downstream from
the meter. This electricity is
used by the building as part
of its normal operation.
