What's on?
Collaborative,
creative scientists are in the very early days of working on a
wikispace. Do visit it and see if you can help us develop.
Planning for 'The Climate Change Conference 2008' is well in
hand. Do contact Dr Frank Martinelli (Ralph Allen) for details. The
secondary conference is on June 19th and June 20th and will be at
University of Bath. The primary conference is on July 16th at Bath
Spa University.
These are just a few thoughts - I hope that those there as well
as those who were not there will help to extend this.
Envolve -
partnerships for sustainability runs and supports projects and
events. 'Envolve works with people from all walks of life,
especially those from disadvantaged communities, to encourage wiser
ways of living that lead to more healthy and sustainable
communities, businesses and schools.'
A couple of points - check the Bath Taps into
Science website and the Bath and Royal Literary and
Science Institute for what is going on to entice scientists of
all ages and expertise.
Contact Liz Andrews at University of Bath has a lot of contacts
with scientists and engineers of all persuasions who can go into
schools. There are a lot of competitions for children and young
people - Liz has information on dragsters, lego, inventions,
rockets... some times there is kit and/money for the asking - so
dont be shy!
Elizabeth Devon (University of Bath and Earth Learning
Idea) is offering to run KS2, 3 or 4 workshops for groups in
B&NES maintained schools. She and two colleagues are running
activities as part of the International Year of Planet Earth -
www.earthlearningidea.com She
is willing to run any of these and any from the standard workshops
from ESEU for small groups of pupils. Contact her
direct.
The Science Cafe for KS5 run in Ralph Allen is very popular and
Frank Martinelli (Ralph Allen) is very happy to talk to anyone
about how he has set this up.
Naomi Greenough (Wellsway) has a lot of contacts at Bristol
University if you are looking for scientists
Peter Ramsay (Writhlington) has contacts in various scientific
fields; primate, orchids, oil... and would be delighted to share
his passion for rocks!
Some teachers have been scientists in their former existence
and there seems to be an exciting possibility
of a science day where those people had the opportunity to run
workshops to share their passions as scientists with adults,
children and young people.
ESEU Earth
Science Education Unit offers workshops for schools and it will
only cost the price of the presenters travel.
Brief details are on this site
Some of us want to know more and have no background in science
at all and wanted to know where to go for ideas. It is very
difficult to have as much personal contact as we would like so if
people would like to send me information, links, ideas I will put
it them on the APEX website as a central pool. I have
begun to put a few websites that might be of interest to all
ages.
It would be wonderful to hear more about what your children and
young people are exploring as budding scientists. If you have
details on your school website let me have the link!

Humanities Education is a company which delivers bespoke
