P.A.S.S. Pupil Attitudes to Self and School
Why are schools in our authority using it?
“P.A.S.S. was developed out of a conviction that in all
areas of life and certainly in school the attitudes that we
bring to any endeavour are a crucial determinant of success." This
is a sentiment very much shared by teachers and all those involved
with children and young people.
Schools across Bath and North East Somerset are using P.A.S.S.
to add to teacher's understanding of how their pupils are feeling
about themselves as learners and their learning environment, and
enable schools to improve what they are doing.'
There are many ways of trying to hear how children and young
people are feeling about themselves and P.A.S.S. is one way that
enables the child and young persons voice to be heard by not only
by the teacher working most closely with them but also by teachers
with a variety of responsibilities for improving the school as a
learning community for all their pupils.

How are schools using P.A.S.S.?
Schools are using P.A.S.S. in a variety of ways and it is early
days so this is very much work in progress.
Some are using the information to help their discussion with
individuals, some are using it to identify children and young
people who may be feeling vulnerable or fragile as learners and
need support.
Some schools are using the data as part of their self
evaluation.
Over the next year we will be adding short accounts to the site
of how P.A.S.S. has been used.
For instance one of our secondary schools is using
P.A.S.S. very creatively:
- we have used PASS in the following way:
- It is now on CMIS so it is accessible to tutors and any staff
dealing with the pupil
- We have used this as one of the tools to select students for
Year Eight for some research, e.g. linked to emotional
literacy
- Using P.A.S.S. and behavioural knowledge for interventions with
Year Eight - team building/communication/problem solving
session
- Using P.A.S.S. and knowledge of pupils to select Year Ten
students for additional opportunities
A primary and secondary school has worked closely using the
P.A.S.S. data to help make the transfer work better for the
children.
How are schools and teachers supported?
Bath Spa University, School of Education, is supporting teachers
using P.A.S.S. through accredited action research.
The LA School Improvement Team and the Inclusion Support
Services are supporting through the work with individual
pupils and schools, and through the networks and strategies.
This page will be updated as schools share how they are using
P.A.S.S. to inform their work
