Mathematicians

There is still a space on the collaborative maths enquiry project. If you are looking to stimulate your budding mathematicians and develop and share your own enthusiasm as an enquiring mathematician now is your chance. Contact me for more details if you have missed this one!

The Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families asked Sir Peter Williams to undertake a review into the teaching of mathematics in primary schools and early-years settings.

The interim report of the Williams Mathematics Review was published on 19 March and a final report is due to be published in June 2008. Following the publication of the interim report, there will be a consultation period of six weeks until 30 April. The DCSF welcomes contributions from schools through the consultations area of its website.

Budding linguists?

Launched this week, the search is now on to find the Junior Language Challenge (JLC) champion for 2008. Any child who will be 11 or under on September 1 this year is eligible to take part - either at school or home. The challenge is to learn up to three languages in nine months, starting with Dutch. The competition has the backing of CILT, the National Centre for Languages.

All entrants are given a free Learn Dutch CD-Rom worth £20, and those children who get through to the next round will also receive additional free software. The competition is now in its sixth year and the organisers say that more than 10,000 children have taken up the challenge in that time. Schools interested in installing the JLC software on the RM network or entering the challenge, should email jlc@eurotalk.com or visit the EuroTalk website.

Visit the EuroTalk website for more information on  http://eurotalk.com/jlc/
