Extended Services Strategy

April 2006

‘We want all Children and Young People to do better in life than they ever thought they could. We will give children and young people the help they need to do this’

Vision Children and Young People’s Plan 2006-2009

Schools and Extended Services are central to how the Children Act/Every Child Matters will be implemented locally and how we will achieve this vision across our authority. Local Area Partnerships will form the framework for the planning, delivery and evaluation of services to meet local need in delivering better outcomes.

The provision of extended services by all schools by September 2010 forms a key element in the delivery of the Government’s Every Child Matters agenda.

At present the term Schools and Extended Services is being used to describe schools which make the ‘CORE OFFER’ – namely:

  • “Wraparound” childcare provision 8am to 6pm
  • A varied menu of out of hours activities, including study support
  • Swift and easy referral to specialist services
  • Parenting support, including advice and family learning
  • Wider community access to ICT, sports and arts facilities

Guiding Principles

  • Recognise and build on the wide range of provision already in place
  • Ensure that future funding of services is managed by Local Area Partnerships to be best used to reflect local need
  • Support the development of extended service projects that both support core learning objectives and are responsive to local needs
  • Ensure that all activities are of high quality, sustainable and integrated into other school & local area activities
  • Ensure that the programme complements strategies already in place and builds towards schools as hubs/access points for a wide range of services
  • Encourage the active involvement of partner agencies and specialist expertise to help deliver the programme
  •  Ensure that Human Resource and Finance functions fully support the development of extended services
  • Ensure that service delivery includes the active participation of parents, carers, children and young people and is reflective of their needs
  • Ensure that activities and delivery support and enhance the development of Children’s Centres

Local priorities

In Bath and North East Somerset the Schools and Extended Services programme will build on the local and national priorities as identified in the Children and Young People Plan. The programme will focus on extended services in their widest sense and will embrace learning outside the classroom.
