The Education and Inspections Act 2006 placed  Local Authorities in the role of commissioners of school places, proposing expansions to all categories of schools, setting the terms for school competitions (where new schools are proposed) and taking all decisions relating to school organisation.  As a result, the Act abolishes the School Organisation Committee.
