“I learnt new things, new words, how people react,
what other people’s views on things were." Christie, aged
15
Radstock Youth Centre encourages and supports young
people to make a positive contribution both to the Centre and the
wider community.
Young people contribute to the development of work in the area,
some through Millennium Volunteers, to provide a range of
activities for other young people including working with the Junior
Gateway Club at the Centre.
Projects based at the Centre work in partnership with a number
of local organisations including nesa (the
principal arts development agency for Bath and North East Somerset
area) to provide a varied curriculum for young people.
“I loved singing, it was really brilliant." Lucy, aged
15
Projects use a range of arts-based activities to facilitate
curriculum issues. This arts-based work includes young people
designing artwork for the Youth Service profile and for the Young
B&NES Award, a new local accreditation scheme for young
people.
One group of young people at the Centre is working in
partnership with Norton Radstock College. Young people are referred
to the College or Youth Centre from local secondary schools. These
young people are developing a varied curriculum including gaining
credits towards Youth Achievement Awards.
Other Projects include
- A group of young women organising an International Women’s Day
for other local young women.
- Young people developing a business plan in order to start up a
music and DJ business in conjunction with the Prince’s Trust.
- Young people planning a summer and Christmas market for the
local community.
