We have a choice of rooms here at the Guildhall

The Russell Room

  • Marriages in the Russell Room are simple and meaningful.
  • We have room for up to 10 people including the bride and groom.
  • We are unable to offer enhancements in the Russell Room.

The Alkmaar Room

The Alkmaar Room

 

  • The beautifully refurbished Alkmaar Room is a wonderful setting for your marriage.
  • We have seating for up to 120 guests
  • We can offer a more personalised ceremony
  • You may have a reading
  • We can interview the bride and groom separately before the ceremony

Historic Mayors Parlour

 

There are also some wonderful rooms within the Guildhall that are administered by Bath's Historic Buildings. Please click on the highlighted link for further information.

Couples wishing to marry in the Guildhall may also like to consider having their ceremony in the historic Mayor's Parlour. It is available on Saturdays.

About the ceremony

A marriage is an oral contract, you must declare you are free to marry one another, and contract to take the other person in marriage. Signing the register is a record of your marriage.

You will need to bring two witnesses with you. They should  preferably be over 18 and must be able to understand English. They will also need to sign the register at the end of the ceremony. 

 The legal words

You must make the legal declation in the words laid down by law. The choices are;

THE DECLARATION

1. I do solemnly declare that I know not of any lawful impediment why I .............. may not be joined in matrimony to .............

2. I declare that I know of no legal reason why I ........may not be joined in marriage to ............

3. By answering "I am" to the following question "Are you ............. free lawfully to marry ...............

THE CONTRACTING WORDS

1. I call upon these persons here present to witness that I .......... do take thee ............... to be my lawful wedded wife/husband

2. I ............ take you ............... to be my wedded wife/husband

3. I .......... take thee ........... to be my wedded husband/wife
