Keynsham Town Plan (2004)
The Town Plan was published in March 2004. It was the
culmination of nearly two years’ community consultation. The
project was initiated by Keynsham Town Council, and funded jointly
by the Town Council, Bath and North East Somerset Council and the
Countryside Agency. Copies are available from the Keynsham
Town Council Office.
Town Centre Action Plan
The Keynsham Town Centre Management Steering Group meets
quarterly to steer the work of the Local Partnerships Co-ordinator
and lobby for improvements to the town centre. They agree an
annual Action Plan with targets relating to environment, economy,
healthcheck data, networking and events. To see a copy of the

Keynsham Fairtrade Town
Keynsham became a Fairtrade Town in February 2005 after a
year-long campaign by Keynsham Fairtrade Group. Its status
was renewed in 2006. This means that the town is officially
recognised by the Fairtrade Foundation as being a place where you
can buy Fairtrade good in local shops and where the community
supports the promotion of Fairtrade. If produce carries the
FAIRTRADE mark, this means that the farmer producing it in a
developing country has received a fair price, including a premium
which is invested in the local community. Regina Joseph, a
banana farmer from Dominica in the Windward Islands, attended the
launch of Keynsham as a Fairtrade Town in March 2005 and explained
that the development of the Fairtrade initiative had enabled huge
improvements to individual lives and to the community as a whole in
Dominica. Personal benefits of a guaranteed income and more
environmentally friendly farming methods included being able to
send their children to school and no longer using pesticides which
had been making people ill. The community had spent their
'social premium' on improving roads and buying computers for local
schools. Supporters of Fairtrade in Keynsham include
Keynsham Police Station and Fire Station, Keynsham Town Juniors
Football Club and the Timeout Youth Drop-in Centre.
Farmers' Market
Keynsham Farmers' Market was launched in October 2004.
Operated by Somerset Farmers' Markets, it runs once a month on the
second Saturday from 9am - 1pm in the Fear Institute in the High
Street. It offers a friendly place to buy a good range of
local produce; including meat, vegetables, honey and cheese,
direct from the farmer. It is also a meeting place with a
chance to sit and chat with friends while drinking a cup of
Fairtrade tea or coffee.
